This person will investigate the use of technology (including digital media and video) in setting up community networks. These networks involve families, teachers, students, parents, and seniors. Special efforts will be made to include aboriginals, persons with disabilities, and newcomers to Canada and the use of French language. Ability in web programing and blog template development an asset for this position. The employee must support the values of FACTS and their partners, as well as work on other FACTSnet projects, as required. Research, training and network development may take place at various sites within and outside the constituency and over the Internet.

Mill WoodsTechnical Coordinator Summary of Job Summer 2011
My coop work experience with the Family and Community Twining Society (FACTS) was very positive. Not only was this my first co-op working experience, but it was also my first experience working full-time. My job as a Technical Coordinator provided me with a unique learning opportunity.
Being able to work flexible hours was a strange experience at first, however, I feel that having to fit 40 hours gave me valuable time-management experience. Also beneficial to me was my work with PowerPoint presentations. Creating over ten different presentations over the summer gave the opportunity to familiarize myself with PowerPoint, which I am sure will be, an asset to me in my career. This is important, especially considering that many employment opportunities in the Computer Engineering field will involve training others with technology that I have worked on. I also really enjoyed our discussion periods with the teachers from Japan.
I was also able to work on things directly related to the Computer Engineering program. I spent some time working with Linux, including using the terminal. This gave me the opportunity to apply some of my skills learned from my Operating Systems class. Not only did my work with the laptops allow me to utilize my soldering and Computer Hardware skills, but it also provided the opportunity to completely disassemble a laptop, which was a great learning experience. Working with Blogger was good, as well, because it gave me an introduction to HTML coding.
The only thing that I did not like about my work experience was the monotony of some of the projects that I worked on. For example, creating a list of 200 different versions of O Canada was at times not the most exciting thing to be doing. That being said, it was probably a good experience, because much of a beginner programmer's job involves working on monotonous tasks.
In conclusion, my co-op experience with FACTS has provided me with valuable work experience, which I am sure will beneficial when I am seeking employment in the future.
Centralta Blog Coordinator Summary (Summer 2011)
This summer I worked for Centralta Tourism Society in St.Albert. The first project I worked on was the Sainte Marguerite d'Youville / Grey Nuns Mural project with ESSMY school in St.Albert. I researched and found information on both. I created a Grey Nuns Blog and worked with the school on providing direction for the mural by finding resources and pictures to use in the mural. I also worked at recruiting students to be involved this was successful and I set up a lot of the groundwork so that this project can start in the fall of this year. Then I worked on reading stories and writing up Questions and Answers for the Grades that the stories applied to. This took a lot of time. I did presentations to Grade 8 students about the Japan Albert blog and my experience there. This was very enjoyable. I attended many meetings, worked on PAC blog and getting my Tech assistants to do research for me and to work on PAC and New Comers to Canada blog. I have done alot of networking with the Schools in St.Albert by volunteering and contacting the schools. For example, I worked with students and staff from Fowler school and did a video interview with Mr. Fowler, for whom the school is named. I have also been working on reading The End of Religion for the Faith in Action Blog I hope to get this read by the end of the summer.
I only had a 6 week position with 240 hours making it difficult to get work done but still save my hours so that I could be involved in hosting and working with Japanese teachers and attend the summer meetings. The most difficult aspect of the Job is working on things I'm not passionate about and working with others, who don't communicate or get their work done well or when I need it done and waiting on others in order to get my work done. I enjoyed the mural project and working on it with ESSMY. I did not enjoy the big group work meetings, as it did not help me do my Job better as I had learned most of what was covered last year or it did not apply to me. The only things I learned at the big group meetings is what others had accomplished. I enjoyed the repetitive activities the least, as I found them boring and not where my passion or interest was. I enjoyed working on the Alberta/ Japan, New Comers to Canada and PAC and Grey Nuns blog as they were more interesting, as I got to work with others and I can see where the blogs are going and how they will be used and how what I did impacted others. The Questions and Answers and summary of stories I did not see how what I did would impact and get others involved in the future as people don't want paper copies anymore they want Internet sites, videos and pictures.
FACTSnet Summer Jobs 2011
All of the jobs listed below will be funded by Canada Summer Jobs. Therefore, to apply for a position you need to be a full time student (ages 15-30) who is going back to school next fall (see Eligible Student Participants). Preference will be given to education students with the background and experience suitable for the specific job. All jobs are 16 weeks (depending on funding) and 40 hours per week starting May 2nd. All eligible student are encouraged to apply and priority will be given to aboriginals, disabled persons and members of visible minorities.
