FACTSnet Summer Jobs 2010

All of the jobs listed below will be funded by Canada Summer Jobs.  Therefore, to apply for a position you need to be a full time student (ages 15-30) who is going back to school next fall (see Eligible Student Participants).  All jobs are 40 hours per week unless otherwise posted.  Post Secondary Jobs are for 16 weeks (depending on funding) starting May 3rd and High School jobs are for 6 weeks starting July 2 unless otherwise posted.  All eligible students are encouraged to apply and priority will be given to aboriginals, disabled persons and members of visible minorities.

FACTSnet Summer 2010

FACTnet partners with the Centralta Tourism Society and others to offer summer programs for students.  This summer we have Canada Summer Jobs funding for several Post-Secondary and High School positions see  FACTSnet Summer Jobs 2010.

During May and June our Post-Secondary students will be contacting schools and community groups to develop networks that will
Transform Education and Community Through Generative Dialogue and participation in the networks.  Follow links to our summer programs below:

Summer Programs 2009

Two heritage programs (St. Albert, and Spruce Grove) employed 5 students as follows:
  1. One from Ambrose University College
  2. One from UofA Faculty of Arts
  3. One from UofA Campus St. Jean
  4. Two High School students from Edmonton Catholic Schools.

Blogs Roger worked this summer:


For the first week I was working on the St. Albert job. At that time there were around seventy blogs, now there are ninety-six. Some of these new blogs I had set up (such as Blog Implementations and FACTS Summer 09), though most of them were set up by Luc as French blogs. On the St. Albert job, I was researching and getting into contact with Churches in the area. Before being moved to the Spruce Grove job I had made a list of all the St. Albert Churches and their online histories (the post has since been modified with information on the churches foundings).
On the Spruce Grove job I spent a lot of time doing general administrative work. I set up and modified some of the aspects of the Inspiring Education Conversations (such as inspedpic) as well as taking part in an online conversation myself.
It started to become apparent that if we were going to continue using the blogger module it needed to be organized a bit better. Mr. Ibsen, the summer team, and I had discussions as to what this organization would look like. The fruits of this labor can be found in FACTSnet Index along with the other two Index blogs. This organization should lay the groundwork for those who come after us and make their jobs easier.
Apart from that I still spent time doing research from online history books and over the phone. This work can be found on Tri-Heritage Network and Stony Plain Christmas blogs.

For the bulk of the summer I had been familiarising myself with the St. Albert history books, The Black Robe's Vision. The priority of my job was to gather any sort of information on the St Albert Jubilees, from the founding in 1861, 1911, and 1961 to the upcoming 150th anniversary in 2011. Everything I managed to glean was put into the St Albert Jubilee blog. I also spent time creating charts for the various organisations in St. Albert and looking for their histories online to post.

The Alberta Social Studies (Local History) blog was set up to create a standard for FACTS and for Alberta Education. The information in this blog was intended so that in the near future, students in St. Albert would have the opportunity to learn about their own local history. With a Grade 12-to-be in our team, we were able to expand and detail the goals of using St. Albert history as a part of the Grade 12 Social Studies curriculum, and thus, the St. Albert Issues: A historical Perspective was implemented.

Towards the end, I had the opportunity to start writing a few stories on St. Albert history, such as the establishment of the Mission and early Christmasses celebrated in the young St. Albert community. An index of The Black Robe's Vision was also made.

Spruce Grove, Stony Plain & West Edmonton Projects 09

For the month of June we are focusing on Heritage Education conversations and other projects for schools see Inspiring Education (Heritiage Conversation Template).

In July and August we will work on projects related to our CSJ positions see Spruce Grove, Stony Plain & West Edmonton Positions 09. as follows:

Both students will
  1. Contact organizations in the constituency (Edmonton - Spruce Grove) that work with persons with disabilities, newcomers to Canada, disadvantaged children & youth, seniors, Aboriginal people and members of visible minorities, with the view of developing a network of organizations that work with these groups.
  2. Research the history of the above mentioned groups, especially interviewing seniors to create a digital archive for current and future use.
  3. Use the research to develop and present historical stories, for use in schools and the community.
  4. Use the Internet and other digital technology (especially digital versions of local history books).
Our University Student will focus on:
  1. Developing the network.
  2. Researching and writing stories in English.
  3. Protestant History.
Our High School Student will focus on:
  1. Researching and writing stories in French
  2. French and Catholic History.

All applicants need to be able to write stories for children in French and English, have basic Internet and computer skills and have an interest in historical research & story telling. A working knowledge of video interviewing an asset. Priority will be given to aboriginals, disabled persons and members of visible minorities.

Network & Heritage Consultant (Post Secondary - position filled)

To contact organizations in the constituency (Edmonton - Spruce Grove) that work with persons with disabilities, newcomers to Canada, disadvantaged children & youth, seniors, Aboriginal people and members of visible minorities, with the view of developing a network of organizations that work with these groups. Part of the project will be to research the history of the above mentioned groups, especially interviewing seniors to create a digital archive for current and future use. The results of the research will be used to develop and present historical stories, in both French and English, for use in schools and the community. The project will use the Internet and other digital technology (especially digital versions of local history books).

Network & Heritage Assistant. (High School - Six weeks starting July 6th - Position filled)

The project will use the Internet and other digital technology (especially digital versions of local history books). Duties will also include participating in fund raising activities.

Summer Heritage 09 Projects & Support

FACTS - Family And Community Twining Society is working with other organizations to facilitate historical research, the development of digital archives, and other heritage projects as follows (see links for examples):
  1. Finding the stories behind a mural or a picture.
  2. Developing stories for use in L.A. or Social Studies classes.
  3. Music heritage
  4. Scanning documents and pictures *
  5. Taking digital pictures. *
  6. Creating digital (video, audio, images) archives of Historical events.*
  7. Recording oral history using High Definition video.*
*Illustrations for these projects are available on DVD and High Definition video is stored on hard drives using a portable docking system.

FACTS will be offering training sessions to facilitate networking and assist others in doing similar projects. These sessions will be offered at minimal cost and on a donation basis for charitable organizations.

Research and Development Assistant (High School - Six weeks starting July 6th)

Assist in, researching, in both French and English, the history of St. Albert in preparation for the150th anniversary of St. Albert. The research will have a focus on the history of aboriginal & metis people, persons with disabilities, newcomers to Canada and members of visible minorities. The results of the research will be used to develop and present historical stories, in both French and English, for use in schools and the community. Wherever possible seniors, children, youth and others will be involved in the research and development of the stories. The project will use the Internet and other digital technology (especially digital files of St. Albert's history books).

Canada Summer Jobs 2009 Funding

Eligible students:
  • Are between 15 and 30 years of age;
  • Have been registered as a full-time student in the previous academic year and intend to return to school on a full-time basis in the next academic year;
  • Are Canadian citizens, permanent residents, or have official refugee protection status under the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act; and
  • Are legally entitled to work in Canada, according to relevant provincial/territorial legislation and regulations.
