FACTSnet Summer Personal Development Comments

Below are comments about opportunities for personal development through FACTSnet summer.

My work at FACTsnet afforded me many opportunities for professional and personal development. The first instance of this was with the book ‘Breakthrough Solution’ and the webinar by Dr. Grant Mullen. Those gave me a lot of insight into hidden weights I had to be careful not to carry around lest they hamper my efforts and relationships both at home and in the workplace.

FACTsnet afforded me the opportunity to attend the Vitalize 2013 conference on company time, funded by a different organization. This was a great boon to me as the conference was full of interesting and motivating speakers. My personalized conference plan focused on communication – how to communicate with colleagues, board members, community members and so on. The lessons learned from this conference were applied immediately to my work with FACTsnet, and will stay with me throughout my affiliation with various nonprofits.

FACTsnet provided me with an account to use on the Flag Page website, [From Bags to Flags]which examined what values are most important to me. I learned that I value personal connections, efficiency and competency. This explained to me why I get along with certain people, and less so with others. I seek out those who share the same values I do. This helped me understand that I need to be respectful of others who don’t share the same values – they have their own values, which are just different and not bad.

My duties with FACTsnet required a lot of communication and cooperation with other members of the summer 2013 team. This afforded me an excellent opportunity to practice my teamwork skills which will serve me well in the field of education.

This summer, I worked with two high school students within my constituency. I tutored them on CTS  (Career & Technology Studies) modules taken from Alberta Education – this involved making lesson plans with learning outcomes, actual teaching, evaluation, and making final reports. All of those were excellent hands on practice of tasks I will need to do frequently as a teacher. It also gave me an opportunity to explore the approach of different schools to teaching students with disabilities.

I helped coordinate two FACTsnet events this summer, and gave presentations at both. While I was already a very experienced presenter, any opportunity to brush up on my skills while making new network connections is very welcome!

Finally, I learned through FACTsnet of an online course aimed at creating better relationships with people in my personal or professional life. This course gave me new insights into my relationship with several people close to me, and I will be using what I learned on an ongoing basis.

Parents As Coaches Alberta - Seminar and Dialogue Summer 2013

2013 Adaptabilities/Disabilities Seminar and Dialogue Session

Blogger for the Family

One of the topics that is discussed in the Parents As Coaches - Seminar and Dialogue Summer 2013 presentation is an intro into what blogging is, how to use Blogger, and how it can be used for the family.

In essence, blogging is online journaling. Generally, blogs are made up of individual posts that are created by one person, or a small group. Sometimes, you can have a blog with multiple authors that are all edited by a single person before they are published.

There are multiple online tools you can use to do this. In this case we are using Blogger, a free blogging service from Google. Blogger is a simple to use tool that is intuitive and easy to use for anyone, irregardless of their technical skills or experience.

In the presentation, it will be discussed in more detail on how to create your own blog as well as what it can do for your family.

Technical Coordinator for Community Networks

Currently I hold the position of Technical Coordinator for Community Networks. My main duties consist of training other FACTSnet employees how to Blogger, set up email accounts, and help problem solve any other issues that might come up (e.g. being the liaison between NAIT and FACTSnet). I work as part of a team to make sure that any technological problems are solved and new technologies implemented.

The main goal of my position is to demonstrate the importance of technology in creating communities. By helping spread understanding on how important the role technology plays in creating communities, we can create an important network of resources to support families, teachers, students, etc.

We would like to work with school administrators and community groups to help further expand this network.
One of the things we are currently doing to achieve this goal is working with the Centralta Tourism Society to digitally archive books. While our main focus for this project is to digitally archive an anthology of historical fiction stories of the Grey Nuns. The Grey Nuns is a religious institute of Roman Catholic sisters founded by Sainte Marguerite d’Youville. This project is part of the celebration of the 150th anniversary of the Grey Nuns. Another thing we are doing to celebrate this 150th anniversary is collaborating with schools to create 150 stories and 150 works of art from students.
Another way we are achieving our goal is by demonstrating how different technologies can be used to facilitate communication. We ourselves are using AnyMeeting as a way to communicate across Canada. We have a blogging system (via Blogger) set in place to help promote and explain our works. These are just examples of how we use technology to further our cause.
In the future, we will be holding a symposium that will further demonstrate the importance of technology in education and the arts. While the main topic of the symposium is about learning disabilities and adaptabilities, FACTSnet will also be demonstrating what type of role technology plays in overcoming learning disabilities.
FACTSnet will also be a source of training documents and tutorials so that future generations of community builders can take a look at FACTSnet as an example and draw inspiration on how to build a successful network of contacts. This will also benefit future teachers as well in that we can provide an example of how to generate out of class discussions that would compliment the school curricula.

As FACTSnet is a non-profit group the resources needed are going to be drawn from government funding and donations from the community. Anyone can participate, as our goal is to facilitate community relationship building. It doesn’t matter what type of skillsets one has. What FACTSnet is trying to promote is the networking and building of relationships within the community; a place where everyone can rely on and help each other.

Another position I currently hold with FACTSnet is the one of Executive Director. In this position, I am responsible for helping edit blogger posts, and coordinating the different groups that are all working for FACTSnet. I coordinate meetings and help with resolving issues that any FACTSnet team member may encounter. In short, my job is to see what needs to be done and make sure that the appropriate people do complete that task.

Summer Coordinator for School/Community Networks

As Summer Coordinator for School/Community Networks, my job is to write blogs about FACTSnet  IT in Education and Arts, FACTSnetTips, a recycling electronics and composting in schools project. I also contribute on projects such as sustainability and adaptability/disabilities with other team members. This as well as helping other team members is in my daily work time. All our projects need great networking and teamwork skills with other team members. I do research on how to use information technology efficiently in education. I write blogs that can help students, teachers, and parents to use educational software, programs and internet usage.

My goal is to establish a great network within schools and other FACTSnet networks groups across Canada. As well, I will put a special effort to contact groups that work with aboriginals, persons with disabilities, and newcomers to Canada. In order to accomplish this, I work closely with schools and share knowledge with other  FACTnet groups during meetings and Anymeeting. Efficient and clear communication is an asset in my job description.

Working Proposal - Parents as Adaptablity/Disability Coaches

Most of the obstacles faced by disabled people, especially children, have very little to do with the disability itself. We all interact with many people in our daily lives. Most of those people have very little to no experience interacting with people with disabilities. Those are small encounters that most of us do not think about - the bus driver or person seated next to you on the morning commute, the receptionists and secretaries at the bank or doctor's office, random passerby's saying hello on the sidewalk or bus stop. For a disabled person, each of those encounters is a potential emotional minefield if they are not prepared. At any time a disabled person could be subject to some degrading or insulting action or comment, whether international or not. Additionally, disabled people are often labelled by their disability first, whereas a non-disabled person is more likely to be labelled by his personality and/or skills. This is the reality for disabled people. To succeed in navigating those obstacles, it is essential that the disabled person have a solid foundation of self-esteem and self-confidence. They must see themselves as people with a disability rather than as a disabled person. They must feel confident in their ability to be assertive and stand up for themselves in the face of adversity. The positive shaping of a disabled person in this manner must start very early in life, with the parents. They must treat their children as people first, worthy of love and attention. Accommodations and adaptations should be a secondary focus instead of the main reason for interacting with the child. They should feel like they are valued persons, not people who need to be 'fixed' first and foremost. Proper coaching will produce a person who not only has strong self esteem, confidence and assertiveness, but is also a productive and contributing member of his or her family, community and society.

Summer Coordinator for Community Networks (Worldview) - Plan 2013

In my position with FACTsnet this summer, I am responsible for overseeing the coordination and development of education-related information networks  that take more of an all-encompassing worldview perspective and target audience. My work on such fields as English curriculum and disabilities in the classroom are geared towards a very general audience, being useful to students, teachers, parents, administrators, support staff and anyone else connected to education at any grade level. My goal is to create and improve on information databases that will allow readers to apply best-practice principles on the classroom and individual levels, creating a ripple of positive effect on all students but especially those with exceptional needs. I am also involved in coordinating a possible seminar on how parents can serve as coaches for their children, especially those who have disabilities or challenging behaviors.

Briefly, in my position as Summer Coordinator for Community Networks (Worldview), I oversee the creation and editing of information networks that provide universally useful information on education-related topics including but not limited to adapting curriculum and disabilities in the classroom.
