Morinville Heritage Research and Development Coordinator

http://canadianafacts.blogspot.com/?zx=e0bdd10e40b693bf The above link is to the Canadiana blog which is all of my research and a summary of my articles in English.

My name is Nicole Labonté.  I worked as the Morinville Heritage Research and Development Coordinator- Post Secondary.  During the summer I researched different subjects relating to how Canada has remained bilingual after all these years.  My research focused on people such as Sir Guy Carleton, and Louis Riel, who helped shape Canada's bilingualism, as well as events that shaped Canada.  Such event include the Battle of the Plains of Abraham, the War of 1775 (also known as the American Invasion of 1775) and a few others.  All of my research and information can be found in my blog which is posted as a link at the top of this blog.  The English entries are mine.  I also wrote French and English articles on the same subjects.
Another thing is that most of my articles follow what is needed for Alberta Education to be used in schools.
I had a blast learning more about my country and it was fun doing this research hoping that students will be using this for their research in the future.
Below is my job description.
Heritage Research and Development Coordinator (Post-Secondary, Morinville)

To coordinate research, in both French and English, in relationship to Morinville historical sites and projects. The research will include the history of francophone, aboriginal & Métis people, persons with disabilities, newcomers to Canada, and members of visible and other minority groups. The results of the research will be used to develop and present historical stories, in for use in schools and the community.

Wherever possible seniors, children, youth and others will be involved in the research and development of the stories. The projects will use the Internet and other digital technology. The summer employee will participate in FACTS blog networks, especially those related to the research and development of digital archives and heritage networks. The employee must support the values of STC and their partners. Research and network development may take place at various sites within and outside the constituency and over the Internet.

Stephanie - Technical Coordinator

My position as Technical Coordinator came with the responsibility of making sure that all the blogs on each account (FACTSum, FACTSc, FACTSfr and Tricomn ) looked well edited and presentable. The main focus was adding the new template to blogs, backing up files, rearrange and adding gadgets, as well as checking for spelling and grammar on each individual blog. This was done and completed on all four of those accounts.

Complete List of Blogs

The link above leads to all blogs worked on by the FACTS team. My responsibility on these blogs was to make sure that they each had a working link added to them. (The link opens up to where the blogs are posted to the public). All blog with the letter "P" at the right hand side have been published. The ones with "E" have been edited but still needs additional spelling and grammar check.

Complete List of Blogs

The link above contains all blogs published to the public. A few of them are still empty while most of them need additional editing, spelling and grammar check.

My other responsibility was to help the high school student translate their researches from French to English, then publish them. All three of these students have completed their researches and have them published to the public website

Overall, working for FACTS was a good experience for me.The only challenge I faced was probably keeping up with my work. Other than that, I got to meet very enthused people who enjoyed working. The opportunity to work alone on my own time was also on of the best qualities of working for FACTS.Thanks for the opportunity!

Make Fix And Recyle 2010

Make Fix And Recycle Assistants (High School -Spruce Grove)
Hello if you are reading this you are more then likely involved in Make Fix and Recycle(M.F.R), my name is David.w. I have worked with M.F.R. for the whole summer.

First off, for this job you need patience and a good sense of humor since on any given day you might have to move a wood pile or other random and heavy objects several times. For this job it is a good idea to wear shoes that are thick at the bottom the best is steel toe shoes. In this job we moved lots of heavy objects and 70% of the time we  worked in groups of two or three depending on how many people are employed.

In  groups we repaired  pallets and rebuilding grain storage houses .Now i will describe bosses starting with Dave, Dave is probably the first boss you will meet  he is over supervisory he watches over you most of the time and tells you what to do.the other boss is Ron who is a big switch from Dave when you have Ron as a boss is that he is much more laid back and will more than likely give you lazy assignments.

Last but not least is Orville he is the working man he will tell you what he wants you to get done and more then likely disperse for a while.

100th Anniversary Projects Assistant - Emilie Lusson

Cet été, j'ai écris un article sur la murale de Roméo Dallaire et les forces canadiennes.

En dernier, j'ai fait de la recherche sur les francophones et les Voltigeurs impliqués dans la guerre de 1812.

This summer I wrote an article on the mural of Romeo Dallaire and the Canadian Peacekeeping Forces

I also wrote an article on the Centre de Plein Air Lusson, and did several interviews on the same subject.

Lastly, I did research on the francophones and Voltigeurs implicated in the war of 1812.

Colette, Morinville Heritage Research and Development Assistant

This is Centsas6 or Colette

I work as a Heritage Research and Development Assistant for this summer.

The first project I was assigned this was to interview and write articles on Mural Artists of Legal. I have had the pleasure to interview 4 of the 5.

This summer I was in charge of the research of St Albert and Area school divisions. I researched and contacted the divisions for information on Legal School No. 1738, The Thibault Roman Catholic Public School District No. 35, St Albert Public Roman Catholic School Division and St Albert Protestant Separate School District No. 6.

Finally the last project was the Invasion of Canada in 1775. This project was really fun and was great to get the Canadian perspective.  Links to Rememberance Day Presentation:

BUSINESS MANAGER - 2010 Summary

Name: Matthew Fong
Title: Business Manager

Responsibilities:

Provide payroll support for other FACTS employees, act as communicante between FACTS and Service Canada for all summer employment correspondence, help develop contacts with other organizations and groups in constituencies of interest to FACTS, develop web-based framework for Internet communications and presence.

Commentary:

Besides the official responsibilities listed above, I was involved heavily in the technical and technological framework for FACTSnet, the online network for FACTS' operations. I took the groundwork from 2009's summer students (in the form of disorganized blogs with no consistent, centralized design) and developed what we called internally "FACTSnet Beta". I worked for most of May on a default template for FACTSnet that incorporated design choices and knowledge that I have from years of designing other such interfaces (as outlined in my portfolio here). During this time I also designed a number of draft images, one of which would eventually become the society logo (see the FACTSnet home page for the logo). I also started a manual/FAQ document that I updated regularly throughout the summer (see below). In June I reorganized the large number of blogs created by last year's students and updated links between them to facilitate hierarchical navigation. During this month I also provided training services to other student employees who required extra help with technological aspects of their jobs, including those employed by le Société de Tourisme Centralta (STC) as part of FACTS' partnership with STC. Towards the end of June I researched domain registrar services. Eventually I procured the domain name factsnet.org through Google's own registration services, as Google's support met FACTS' needs very well with the provision of free services ("Google Apps") such as a private email server, site tools, document repository, etc.). At the end of June I trained the high school students that were hired on at the beginning of July. In July I continued to provide training and support for the high school students and administrative work with the domain. The latter of July was spent implementing, upgrading, and tweaking the FACTSnet blog template, which I had developed myself earlier in the summer. August was mostly spent providing support for other summer employees and finishing small administrative tasks for FACTS, such as compiling lists of blogs, employees, and corresponding with auditors from Service Canada.

Throughout the summer I provided constant support for students. To deal with the large volume of inquiries I received regularly, I started a manual hosted on our internal working blog. For access to this manual, please email David Ibsen at factsc@gmail.com, citing the manual in the subject line. This manual was updated regularly to reflect new research, solutions, and descriptions I came up with during my work.

Future recommendations:

Next year's students will need to operate somewhat differently. Because the blog network has been developed substantially since last summer, they will need to do much more reading on the transition manuals than they did this summer. Technical prowess with HTML, CSS, and JavaScript would probably be prerequisites for at least one hire. Communication using email and Google Wave (providing Google does not deprecate the Wave service by then) must be employed in order to facilitate efficiency. We also employed Skype to this end. Contact information (each blog has a page for contact information) will need to be updated to redirect towards a central page hosted on the main FACTSnet webpage. Grammatical and spelling errors in posts will need to be corrected regularly. I have left all my work and resources on file in digital form with David Ibsen for future use.

Andrew Love- Japanese Projects and Faith in Action Projects

Hi. My name is Andrew Love, and I am a post-secondary student working for FACTSnet in the summer of 2010. I was working on two major projects for FACTSnet.

Having been raised in Japan and being familiar with the Japanese culture, I have been researching for FACTSnet's initiative to create connections and exchanges with Japan. I have worked on three blogs as a support to this initiative. The first one is the Japanese History and Culture Network. It is made to serve as an introduction to the history and culture of Japan to the Canadian student. It is centered around the idea of a future trip to Japan, and suggests sites to visit, etc. The second is the Japanese Values Network. A work in progress, this resource is intended as a resource for students to understand the values that underly Japanese culture. As of now, the resource includes summaries and annotations of books that clearly demonstrate Japanese culture. The plan was for the blog to eventually be used to use Japanese media and popular culture to gain insight to the values held by the Japanese people. Finally, the Alberta Cultural Exchange is a resource for the Canadian students to give foreign students information on their own culture.

I have also been working on the Faith in Action projects; see here for more information.

St.Albert International Exchange and Network assistant Summer 2010

St.Albert International Exchange and Network assistant
This summer  I went to Japan with my family. I stayed in two peoples homes for 10 days. I also saw the sites that are recommended in Tokyo from this blog. I gave presentations to high school students for three mornings and in the afternoon went to their after school clubs. The presentations were about Canada and what the culture is like in Canada for some of what I did in class see the Alberta Information for International Students blog.  For the sites that I found most informative for learning about the Edo and Meji periods see suggestions. In Japan it was easy to find people to help you that spoke English if you were lost or had other concerns. We took the train system and found that it is very efficient and a great way of transportation. However one must be fit before going to Japan as there is a lot of walking required. I also worked on making sure things were well organized and did a little bit of development of the network as I created a blog for international students about places to visit in the Edmonton area. For more information see report .
I assisted in Editing and contributing to the blog specifically the Catechism posts.
This was the blog I created and made for international students about the sites to see in Edmonton area.

Amélie's Transition Manual

Hi there, I'll introduce myself, my name is Amélie LeBlanc and I was a coordinator for FACTSnet for summer 2010. What I worked on this summer was essentially to do historical research for the Centralta Tourism Society for the St-Albert 150th Project. I had the opportunity to work on topics such as Father Albert Lacombe, Grey Nuns, Daughters of Jesus, the Acadians and more. I wrote articles in French and translated them into English as well. We also created blogs for FACTSnet on our research subjects for them to be used in schools with students and for teachers as teaching resources. In the meantime, we worked as a team to better the FACTSnet domain blog, which was, in my opinion very successful. I have also left a transition manual with FACTSnet with numerous suggestions that could be made to improve the site even more for summer 2011 employment opportunities.

It has been a pleasure being a summer coordinator with FACTSnet!

Family and Community Digtal Heritage Projects 2010

Building on our previous experience FACTSnet is proposing to following developments, in 2010, for the following digital heritage projects stages.
    1. Stage 1: Using Existing Digital Resources  - This stage is well developed for using digital files from local histories.  These files will continue to be used in stages 3-5
    2. Stage 2: Creating New Digital Resources - This will be the emphasis of our projects this year as we work with Families, Seniors and Youth to get pre-digital era heritage resources digitized.
    3. Stage 3: Developing Presentations - is less urgent as presentation can be done from digital files after our Seniors have left us but are necessary to make the digital files more useful.
    4. Stage 4: Integrating Presentations - This stage is important for making presentations more useful for broader audiences.  The emphasis in 2010 will be to begin creating the digital equivelent of local history books by integrating family presentations with other resources.
    5. Stage 5: Indexing Resources and Presentations - Different people have different interests in heritage resources.   An effective indexing system will help them find the resources they are looking for easily.   FACTSnet indexes will be develop further in 2010 to make this happen.
Most of the development mentioned above will take place in the summer see FACTSnet Summer 2010
